Distribution hybrid transformer (DTH) as an active component of modern “Smart Grid” systems

Project abstract:

The project involves industrial research and development work to develop a distribution hybrid transformer (DTH) with stepless output voltage control, with power factor correction capability and operation as a coupler with DC circuits, including battery energy storage. Such a transformer is an innovative active element of electricity systems, mainly of the “Smart Grid” type, allowing the impacts of variable loads and sources of distributed generation (GR), including RES, on the distribution network to be taken into account.

Project objectives and planned outcomes

The key objective of the project is to develop a new hybrid transformer (DTH) solution. It was assumed that the transformer would be developed in two technology variants. The first will be an integrated system, i.e. a hybrid transformer that can be installed exclusively in its entirety, without changes. This option will be dedicated to new projects in the distribution network or when an existing transformer needs to be replaced, e.g. after a breakdown. The second option, on the other hand, allows the separate “regulating part” itself to be attached to transformers already in operation. The use of this capability, will reduce the cost of guaranteeing the function of smooth voltage regulation in existing transformers.

Project contractors. The project will be implemented by a consortium consisting of:

  • Fabryka Transformatorów w Żychlinie Sp. z o.o.
  • Gdansk University of Technology – Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Controls

Project execution period: 01/08/2019 to 28/02/2022

The total cost of the project, selected under Measure 4.1 of the Intelligent Development Operational Programme 2014-2020, is 2 051 865,22 zł

Under the terms of the Project Grant Agreement, the National Centre for Research and Development has granted funding in an amount not exceeding 1 927 876,09 zł
