Project: Laboratory station for testing converters: AC/DC, DC/DC made with GaN and SiC technology.(I_GANSUP)

Total project value: 270 000,00 PLN

Co-funding: 270 000,00 PLN

The result of the project is the mastery of gallium nitride transistor application technology in the construction of electronic/power electronic systems. In this case, using the example of a linear power supply. The project will provide experience in the design, development of control techniques and assembly of devices using GaN transistors. This will allow the wider introduction of GaN transistors in further designs, together with all their benefits. The project is complementary to a technology project entitled “High-voltage GaN HEMT transistors for linear power supply applications”, to be carried out in parallel with this project. Gallium nitride transistors manufactured by SBŁ will be developed in parallel and will be used in this project. The topics of the project are part of the implementation of the Łukasiewicz programme “Development of gallium nitride-based technologies and products”.
The objective of the project is to obtain a test bench for basic functional testing of the models and prototypes of single- and bidirectional inverters under development in the GTI Research Group: AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC, based on high-speed (GaN and SiC) technology components. The test bench is needed for both the related project and other ongoing projects including: a targeted project entitled “Inverter of photovoltaic batteries in RES systems using GaN technology”, a central device project within the NCRD project “Energy storage – system stream”, and an industrial doctoral program by one of GTI’s employees entitled “Analysis and implementation of a novel three-phase isolated bidirectional inverter with reduced switching losses for use with energy storage in a Smart Grid”.
The project will deliver a test bench for commissioning and basic engineering tests into new solutions for single- and bidirectional AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC, AC/AC inverters, based on high-speed (GaN and SiC) components with a power output of up to approx. 30 kW, equipped with equipment for measuring efficiency and conducted emissions.

The project will contribute to the development of new power electronic inverter solutions connecting distributed renewable energy sources (RES) with the power grid and energy storage, which is in line with the following programmes: balancing Poland’s energy system, distributed power engineering, and the strategy for the transition to a low-carbon economy. Moreover, the test bench will be used for industrial doctoral programs (the first one has already been awarded) in the above subject area which is a practical implementation of the programme: industrial doctoral program.
