The goal of the project is to develop a prototype of a modular (scalable) energy storage system designed to store hydrogen, methane, and mixtures of these gases. The solution will use new Type IV high-pressure composite tanks developed as part of the project. Thanks to their lightweight construction, the tanks will enable energy storage at a density significantly higher than that offered by solutions commonly available on the market.
The project will confirm the technical feasibility of using composite high-pressure tanks to store renewable gaseous fuels such as biomethane, renewable hydrogen, and hydrogen-methane blends. The energy storage system developed addresses the need to advance domestic technologies that support the energy transition, national energy security, decarbonization, and the broader use of hydrogen and biomethane in the economy.
As part of the project, a prototype of a modular energy storage system will be developed, designed to be adaptable to both stationary and mobile applications. Particular emphasis will be placed on achieving a high energy density and a modular design that will enable the system’s energy storage capacity to be scaled
The project will result, in particular, in:
- Łukasiewicz – Institute of Electrical Engineering obtaining the rights to a new lightweight tank for renewable gaseous fuels and a modular, high-energy-density storage system for renewable gaseous fuels;
- Paving the way for Łukasiewicz – Institute of Electrical Engineering to enter the growing market for hydrogen storage systems.
