Hydrogen Propulsion and the Future of Rail – Łukasiewicz – IEL Speaks at Hydrogen4Rail

WHEN?

WHERE.

The Łukasiewicz Institute of Electrical Engineering was a Gold Partner of the 6th Conference “HYDROGEN4RAIL – FUTURE OF TRANSPORT,” organized by the Polish Chamber of Railways, which took place on June 16–17, 2026, in Poznań.

The conference focused on one of the key areas of development in modern transportation—the use of hydrogen as a clean fuel in the rail sector. This is an area of particular importance to the Institute, which is developing expertise in hydrogen technologies, energy storage, smart infrastructure power systems, and solutions supporting low-emission transportation. These activities are carried out, among other things, as part of the European Rail4EARTH2 project (Europe’s Rail Joint Undertaking).

The Institute was represented by:

  • Dr.-Ing. Marcin Parchomiuk – Director of the Łukasiewicz Institute of Electrical Engineering
  • Dr.-Ing. Mateusz Łuba – Director of the Hydrogen Technology Research Center
  • Dr.-Ing. Artur Moradewicz – Acting Director of the Research Center for Electromobility and Intelligent Transportation

Representatives of the Institute actively participated in the event’s program, delivering the following presentations:

  • “A New Dimension in Research—Expanding the Research Capacity of the Łukasiewicz Institute of Electrical Engineering with Funding from the National Reconstruction Plan” – Dr. Eng. Marcin Parchomiuk
  • “R&D Projects in the Field of Hydrogen Technologies and Transportation Carried Out at the Łukasiewicz Institute of Electrical Engineering to Support the Development of the Railway Sector” – Mateusz Łuba, Ph.D., Eng.

Another key element of the conference was the expert panel on “Hydrogen Propulsion” (June 17, 2026), in which Dr. Marcin Parchomiuk, Eng., participated. The discussion focused on the directions of development for low-emission rail transport, the role of hydrogen, and technologies supporting infrastructure transformation—ranging from the design of hydrogen propulsion systems and hydrogen storage facilities to the development of hydrogen infrastructure.

The panel included representatives from academia and industry:

  • Andrzej Ziółkowski, Ph.D., Eng. – Poznań University of Technology
  • Karol Kotylo – H2 Energy
  • Dawid Szkucik – ABB
  • Dr.-Ing. Maksymilian Cierniewski – Łukasiewicz – Poznań Institute of Technology
Moderator: Piotr Tarnawski – TELBUD SA

Participation in the conference and the expert panel underscores the Institute of Electrical Engineering’s active role in developing hydrogen technologies for transportation and its commitment to creating innovative, sustainable solutions for the future of railways.
